The Cabbages and Storks project is an assisted reproduction program for serodiscordant couples (where the man is haemophilic and HIV positive) who wish to have a child without the risk of infecting the female partner and the baby.
A fundamental requirement for completing such an important journey is access to highly specialised counselling (currently not available in the public health units concerned), assisted reproduction techniques offered by first-class facilities, and psychological and social support.
The clinical process we have put in place is managed by a multidisciplinary team operating from the "A. Bianchi Bonomi" Hemophilia Centre in Milan. In keeping with the notion of patient centrality at the heart of Fondazione Paracelso's projects, we have developed the following procedure to accompany couples on their journey to parenthood with the greatest possible care and attention:
- initial examination at the "A. Bianchi Bonomi" Hemophilia Centre in Milan, headed by Professor Flora Peyvandi;
- counselling and checkups at Studio Esman, headed by Dr Enrico Semprini;
- preliminary diagnostic tests prior to treatment;
- virus removal procedure and verification check;
- insemination/fertilisation;
- counselling by a psychologist for those wanting help with managing the emotional aspect.

Currently it is possible to benefit from the project, under strict conditions of confidentiality, for up to three cycles. Fondazione Paracelso also offers accommodation in its guest quarters to anyone who needs to stay in Milan for reasons connected to the procedure. The primary objectives are to ensure that the most appropriate assistance is offered and to reduce the costs for the couple as much as possible.
